finding peace through forgiveness

The Miracle That Healed My Biggest Forgiveness Opportunity

This post describes my biggest forgiveness opportunity.

What is a miracle?

According to A Course in Miracles, a miracle is the undoing of error; the correction of wrong perception; an expression of Love that reflects love back to the one practicing forgiveness. We are all part of the oneness of God, so when we offer forgiveness to another, we are also forgiving ourselves. Carol Howe says this of miracles, “the miracle is a change of perception, a shift in the way you experience everything – people, situations, things – that allows you to directly experience the love that is always present, love that constitutes the substance of everything, regardless of form.”

I had experienced thousands of miracles since beginning my study of A Course in Miracles in 2014, and most of them were small daily-life miracles. Anecdotally I had heard that as one practices forgiveness, the ante is upped over time so that the forgiveness opportunities become progressively more challenging. That has been the case in my experience. And this story is one of the biggest miracles I have experienced.

My daughter needed care

“You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite. Your perception is the result of your invitation, coming to you as you sent for it.” (A Course in Miracles)

Over the span of three years, I sought intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment for my daughter who was chronically ill, homebound, and could not function without a feeding tube and my steady reassurance. IVIG is the standard treatment protocol for her illness, and it is recommended monthly for as long as the patient has been sick. My daughter went about five years undiagnosed and untreated before we found a specialist who diagnosed her illness, so we knew that she would likely need five years of infusions to heal. But insurance companies don’t like to pay for IVIG because it is very expensive, and we had been in a protracted battle with our insurance carrier for several years.

The treatment helped

We knew from paying tens of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for my daughter’s infusions that IVIG helped reduce her brain inflammation so that she could heal. After one infusion she went from being unable to leave the house for any reason, to being able to go to a restaurant with our family and eat outside the house for the first time in three years. We desperately wanted our daughter to heal and resume her life as a happy teenager, and it seemed that we had to get her IVIG to do that.

We battled with our insurance

We visited several out-of-state specialists who prescribed IVIG, but when pre-authorization was submitted to our insurance, it was denied. Next, we tried a peer-to-peer review between our doctor and a doctor at the insurance company, which was also denied. The next step was to appeal the denial so I gathered peer-review journal articles, lab reports, growth charts, medication lists, and many other pieces of evidence which I submitted to our insurance with a compelling letter. This appeal was also denied. Finally, I requested an external review, our only remaining avenue to address the insurance denials, which was legally binding. We visited another out-of-state specialist on Autoimmune Encephalitis and secured a letter of medical necessity stating forcefully that my daughter needed IVIG to resume a normal life, and without it, she would cost the insurance company a lifetime in health-related claims. The external review decision arrived in the mail, and I was crestfallen to find that the denial had been upheld.

But wait …

However, in carefully reading the denial letter I realized that the 189-page document I had sent to our insurance company had not been sent to the external reviewer. The reviewer had only received 250 pages of information from our insurance company. I was outraged and deeply upset that my voice was not being heard or taken seriously, that we were being denied due process, and that what must have been a clerical mistake had cost my daughter her future well-being and happiness.

This decision threw me into a deep pit of anger, frustration, and despair, and I sobbed to my husband that I had hit rock bottom. I had fought for my daughter so hard for so long, and though I could see the next steps before me in the fight, I was paralyzed by despair.

My biggest forgiveness opportunity

So, I began taking the only course of action available to me: I did my forgiveness work. I forgave myself for all the feelings I was having: for feeling victimized, angry, frustrated, betrayed, and helpless. I forgave myself for wanting to quit the fight, and for my battle fatigue. Then I moved on to forgiving the individuals at our insurer responsible for the mistake, for the human resource staff at my husband’s employer who weren’t helping us get the coverage my daughter needed, for the decisions, and the words on the letters, and everything in between.

Bolstered by the encouragement of the parents I knew on Facebook support groups, I continued to fight. I complained to the state Attorney General and the Department of Commerce, and at the Federal level to ERISA, which governs our health plan. Finally, I forgave my feelings of being unworthy of being heard and taken seriously, and my sense of being a victim.

Each day I woke up in despair that the nightmare had not gone away, with a knot in my stomach, and pain in my heart. I directed my loving forgiveness practice to whoever was making me feel awful. For two full weeks, I sent forgiveness to the VP of Benefits at my husband’s employer, to her staff, to the people I had spoken with at our insurance carrier, and to myself. Slowly, the pain began to yield to peace. I began to feel that there were still other options available to us aside from IVIG, and miraculously, part of me began to feel that there really wasn’t an emotional pull when I thought about IVIG anymore.

The miracle moment

I went for a walk with my dog, and I realized that I felt light and happy – happier than I had felt in years. I felt that I had done everything I could do and that the matter was in God’s hands.

The next day I received a phone call from the employee benefits administrator confirming that our insurance carrier was going to offer us an expedited re-consideration of the external appeal. When I received this news I was pleased but unemotional. I realized that I had stepped off the emotional roller coaster when I didn’t need a positive verdict to be happy, and I thought, “yes, forgiveness works.”

Two days later I received news that the denial had been overturned and that my daughter would be receiving covered monthly IVIG infusions for a year, possibly more. The news stunned me, and yet, I knew exactly how it had happened. Forgiveness had undone the knots tying up the situation, and the guilt and separation from God had been undone by my forgiveness.

The shift in mindset

When I had seen only problems I was confined to the mindset and experience that we would forever be plagued by problems. When forgiveness provided the needed correction to the situation, there was room for movement and healing, and my mindset changed. I saw other possibilities existed before I even had a positive verdict. It truly was a miracle.

While I don’t hope for more intense forgiveness opportunities to come my way in the future, I know what it is like now to experience a big forgiveness miracle. Having a chronically ill child has been a big forgiveness opportunity in itself. But the peace I experienced from forgiving this situation was the reward, and an incentive to keep doing my forgiveness practice.

Intention

The Sacred Self-Healing Method relies on the power of intention. Intentions are more than goals, but your co-creative participation in your life path and healing. By setting an intention you add your desire to be a partner in your destiny, in combination with the seen and unseen forces at work in the Universe. Whether you are setting an intention for a successful root canal, for finding a great new job, or for a business meeting to go well, the act of putting forethought about the outcome into the process can be a powerful tool.

Intention is the driving force behind any energy healing modality, from Reiki to sound healing to prayer.

The universal equation for healing is:

Intention + Frequency = Healing

The “frequency” part of the equation is whatever healing modality is being used.

Intention can be used in health healing, job search, fitness, relationships, and pretty much everything.
