The Power of the Breath

This post discusses the benefits of bringing your consciousness to your breath.

Breathing seems simple

Breathing is something we all do automatically. But the typical American breathes shallowly in the chest and seldom expands the lower parts of the lungs. Shallow breathing doesn’t utilize the entire surface area of the lungs. If you are constantly breathing shallowly in the top half or third of your lungs the lower parts don’t get exercised and can collect fluid, or not function properly.

If you watch babies and young children breathing, you will see the rise and fall of their bellies. Animals and young humans automatically breathe in the most healthful way. A breath that extends all the way down to your abdomen is called belly breathing, which uses the whole anatomy of the lungs.

Belly breathing

Belly breathing is important because it aids relaxation and quiets the mind. Used during times of stress, belly breathing can be a helpful centering activity. It reduces stress, improves sleep, aids in digestion, and supports the immune system. My health practitioner recommends 5-10 belly breaths before getting out of bed in the morning, prior to each meal, and again at bedtime. This practice assists in getting the body into a parasympathetic state of rest for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. It has been reported that five minutes of belly breathing reduces one’s cortisol levels by 30%. As well, when you are in a parasympathetic state of rest your body can work on healing.

Breath practices

Many meditation practices employ the breath in one way or another, and there is a specific type of yoga that focuses on the breath called Pranayama. Pranayama can be used in preparation for meditation, by calming the mind and preparing the body for stillness. Just five cycles of intentional breathing at the beginning of meditation practice can completely change your mindset.

So, here are a few ideas to incorporate healthy breathing into your daily life:

  • Take 3-5 deep belly breaths before you get out of bed in the morning
  • Take 3-5 deep belly breaths before you eat a meal
  • If you find yourself stressed out and breathing shallowly, try to feel your breath in your low belly. You can place a hand there for feedback.
  • Spend a few minutes prior to beginning meditation on belly breathing.

Intention

The Sacred Self-Healing Method relies on the power of intention. Intentions are more than goals, but your co-creative participation in your life path and healing. By setting an intention you add your desire to be a partner in your destiny, in combination with the seen and unseen forces at work in the Universe. Whether you are setting an intention for a successful root canal, for finding a great new job, or for a business meeting to go well, the act of putting forethought about the outcome into the process can be a powerful tool.

Intention is the driving force behind any energy healing modality, from Reiki to sound healing to prayer.

The universal equation for healing is:

Intention + Frequency = Healing

The “frequency” part of the equation is whatever healing modality is being used.

Intention can be used in health healing, job search, fitness, relationships, and pretty much everything.
