How to Select, Cleanse, and Program Crystals

This post describes how to select, cleanse, and program crystals for use with intention.

There are many ways to use crystals at home. Wear them next to your body, sleep with them, or carry them in your pocket. Holding or wearing a crystal allows your body to entrain to the energy vibration of the crystal. To make sure your crystals are carrying helpful energies it is important to select stones that you resonate with, to cleanse them when you first get them, and periodically after that, and to program them with your intention.

Selecting crystals

Crystals are energetic helpers and amplifiers. They help reinforce the intention you have created. When selecting crystals, use your intuition (see below). Touch the stones, hold them, and notice which ones feel attractive to you. Which ones make you feel good? If you are choosing between two or three stones, hold them in your hand one at a time and notice which one feels the most “right.”

Cleansing crystals

The makeup of crystals is such that they hold energy. When you pick up a stone in a rock shop, it is likely storing the energies of the many hands that have touched it, from the process of extracting it from the earth (sometimes with great violent force) to being transported, polished, sorted, placed on display, and held by prospective buyers. The key to getting to know crystals is to clear these accumulated energies so that you can use them with your intention.

It’s not usually feasible to cleanse a crystal before you purchase it, but cleansing a crystal needs to be done when you first obtain a new crystal, and periodically after that. Cleansing removes whatever energy the crystal has accumulated.

Hold the crystal under running water, place it in moonlight (overnight), or smudge it with smoke – once a month or so. Use caution because some crystals will fade in sunlight, and water will also damage some crystals. Seek advice from a rock shop on how to cleanse specific stones if you are unsure.

Intention

Intentions are more than goals, but your co-creative participation in your life path and healing. By setting an intention you add your desire to be a partner in your destiny, in combination with the seen and unseen forces at work in the Universe. Whether you are setting an intention for a successful root canal, for finding a great new job, or for a business meeting to go well, the act of putting forethought about the outcome into the process can be a powerful tool.

Intention is the driving force behind any energy healing modality, from Reiki to sound healing to prayer.

The universal equation for healing is:

Intention + Frequency = Healing

The “frequency” part of the equation is whatever healing modality is being used.

Intention can be used in health healing, job search, fitness, relationships, and pretty much everything.

Programming crystals

Programming a crystal adds intention to the energy of the stone. Programming needs to be done when you first obtain a stone, and periodically when you wish to give a stone a new intention. To program a crystal:

1. Define your intention;
2. Hold the stone in your hands while thinking of the intention. Imagine a beautiful light in your chest, growing to hold that intention. Imagine the light flowing to your hands, and into the stone, while speaking (aloud, or silently) your intention into the stone.
