On Sorrow

This post provides a reflection on sorrow.

The prevalence of sorrow

At yesterday’s Caregiver’s Healing Circle we spoke the words that are so often held back in normal everyday conversation. In our sound-bite world there is seldom space to share how we really are doing. And especially when we are suffering, it is not culturally acceptable to share much, if anything, of our internal landscape.

“In this culture we display a compulsive avoidance of difficult matters and an obsession with distraction. Because we cannot acknowledge our grief, we’re forced to stay on the surface of life. Poet Kahlil Gibran said, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain.” We experience little genuine joy in part because we avoid the depths. We are an ascension culture. We love rising, and we fear going down. Consequently, we find ways to deny the reality of this rich but difficult territory, and we are thinned psychically. We live in what I call a “flat-line culture,” where the band is narrow in terms of what we let ourselves fully feel. We may cry at a wedding or when we watch a movie, but the full-throated expression of emotion is off-limits.” – from The Geography of Sorrow by Tim Mckee, syndicated from thesunmagazine.org, Feb 26, 2019; http://www.dailygood.org/story/2223/the-geography-of-sorrow-tim-mckee/

The courage to be sorrowful

One of the participants in yesterday’s circle is experiencing the devastation of having a loved one who is hospitalized due to mental illness. Another realized during the circle that day marks the anniversary of her son’s tragic death years ago. Another participant shared about the unending pain of loss associated with working the hospice field. In each of these cases we were making time to speak the words, clearing space to experience the feelings, and using art and other modalities to try to find a window back to wholeness.

I am humbled by the courage it takes to go to those vulnerable places. I am honored to be witness to the pain, and to see the light shining in these individuals.

Caregiving and sorrow

For all of us in caregiving roles, there are so many layers at play, many of them painful. One way to honor your grief with Sound Healing is to use the sound of your voice to tone the vowel sound “OOO,” associated with the second (sacral) chakra. The sacral chakra is represented by the I AM statement: “I Feel.” By gently toning the vowel sound OOO you honor your pain and it helps to process your feelings.

Intention

The Sacred Self-Healing Method relies on the power of intention. Intentions are more than goals, but your co-creative participation in your life path and healing. By setting an intention you add your desire to be a partner in your destiny, in combination with the seen and unseen forces at work in the Universe. Whether you are setting an intention for a successful root canal, for finding a great new job, or for a business meeting to go well, the act of putting forethought about the outcome into the process can be a powerful tool.

Intention is the driving force behind any energy healing modality, from Reiki to sound healing to prayer.

The universal equation for healing is:

Intention + Frequency = Healing

The “frequency” part of the equation is whatever healing modality is being used.

Intention can be used in health healing, job search, fitness, relationships, and pretty much everything.
