Recognizing the multiple layers of exhaustion

Many caregivers experience multiple layers of exhaustion:

  • Caregiver burnout – the demoralization, disillusionment, cynicism, and physical, mental and emotional exhaustion that frequently occurs among individuals responsible for the constant care of another.
  • Relational stress – when the relationship between the person and their environment (or other people in their environment) is appraised by the person as exceeding his or her resources and endangering his or her well-being. (Lazarus et al 1984)
  • Trauma – those experiencing trauma on a daily or regular basis from stressful caregiving interactions, medical procedures, medical trauma, being the target of aggression
  • Compassion fatigue – a condition characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time. It results from an ongoing, snowballing process that occurs in a demanding relationship with a needy individual.

What can you do?

Taken separately each of these is a heavy load; together they are overwhelming.

How to see your way out?

  1. Recognize what you’re experiencing for all that it is. Brené Brown says, when we ignore our feelings, they don’t go away. Get the professional support you need.
  2. Choose support wisely. Avoid toxic people and relationships
  3. Prioritize yourself and move things off your plate. What does this look like? Delegate anything and everything that can be delegated.
  4. Don’t assume that those around you, even your partner or closest friends, understand the full impact of your traumatic experience. Find the space and time to let them know how you are truly doing. And then tell them what you need from them.
  5. Fill your bucket with things that bring you joy. If something brings you joy or is restorative, it should not be a luxury to be indulged only in those rare moments you can carve out a few minutes of time or space, it is an absolute necessity.

Intention

By setting an intention you add your desire to be a partner in your destiny, in combination with the seen and unseen forces at work in the Universe. Intention + Frequency = Healing

The “frequency” part of the equation is whatever healing modality is being used.

Intention can be used in health healing, job search, fitness, relationships, and pretty much everything.
